Friday's Rewards - 29/08/2014

Hey folks,

Hope y’all are looking forward to a wild weekend of gaming and Playfire Rewards. It’s good to know that when things get a bit crazy, when life throws you a curveball and turns normal upside-down - such as when you get marooned on an island filled with zombies - that games have trained you for these oddly specific scenarios!

Building shelters, gathering resources and fighting zombies round the world would be the sort of thing you’d imagine Russell Crowe to be doing, but How to Survive gives players the chance to get stuck in themselves. With surprisingly visceral and satisfying combat, coupled with an engaging range of weaponry, with the ability to craft over 100 weapons gibbing zombo’s has rarely been so satisfying. Given the added range that only survival aspects of a game can provide, there is the potential to have a really great time as well as getting those cheeky Playfire Rewards!

Chat: Crossovers!

With the announcement that Tekken were teaming up with Pokémon to make the ultimate Poke-fighting game, I've been thinking about some of the more notable gaming crossovers.

Tekken and Pokémon on paper read like to very unlikely bedfellows, but in the trailers seeing Machamp lining up toe-to-toe with Lucario you get the sense that after a series of RPG’s based around the world of Pokémon, a fighting game might be the best way to simulate two powerful trainers battling.

Fighting games as a genre is well suited for crossovers, with Dark Vader and Yoda making appearances in Soul Caliber IV as a toe-dipping exercise, with larger crossovers including a greater selection of characters, such as Mortal Kombat v DC Universe which featured 11 characters from each franchise. There is something endlessly novel about seeing the Scorpion beating seven shades of stuffing out of Superman, as well as being a solid game.

Playfire Rewards - Metro Redux Special

Hey folks,

The lovelies at 4A Games aren’t happy to sit on their laurels and good looks, they’ve been busy busting out the cult classic Metro 2033 and its sequel, Last Light, in a new shinier state.

Take the opportunity to pick up a franchise that passed you by or rediscover a classic that's been remastered! Explore the Moscow metro and survive in a post apocalyptic world filled with all sorts of nasty machinations, all of which are looking to turn you into a pile of glob!

The games have been migrated onto the latest iteration of the 4A Engine, which means that the lighting and physics have been turned up to tear jerkingly pretty. Metro 2033 looks especially remarkable, completely updated with new assets and rendering techniques, even taking Last Light's much more sturdy game interface so you feel like you're playing a more modern game. When you find yourself in the deepest corners of the Metro, Playfire Rewards will be there to help you rearm and reload!

Tuesday's Rewards - 26/08/2014

Hey folks,

I hope that your loins are collectively girded for today’s rewards. There are plenty of cracking new releases to be excited about, including the amazing Super Time Force Ultra!

You play as a true time wizard soldier with the ability to spawn versions your past self to overcome the obstacles that get in your way. With a really crisp retro design the game conjures some great nostalgic feels. The gameplay mechanic itself is inventive and a ton of fun, and the dynamism of bringing different forms of yourself from the past to conqueror bullet hell mobs, humongous badass bosses and those sneaky puzzles, is super engrossing.

As though a sweet game couldn't get any sweeter, for those Team Fortress 2 fans out there, you can live out the dream of playing as the Pyro or Mann Co's esteemed CEO Saxton Hale as you romp through the game, with Zoey from Left 4 Dead also making an appearance - I hope that she won't be overwhelmed by the sheer awesomeness of Saxton in all his glory! Get ready for some gaming!

Friday's Rewards - 22/08/2014

Hey folks,

Hope y'all are looking forward to the weekend, I know we are here at Playfire HQ! We've got a cracking mix of rewards today, with some new releases and some old favourites!

Looking to recapture some of the sparkle that classic multiplayer games brought to us years ago, Jamsouls features platform elements that fit cohesively with the game's bombastic fighting. The result is a fast paced game indeed. The game has a cast of nine evil beings who've been set free from Pandora’s Box - each rocks a powerful special attack and feels unique to play with. Perhaps you can help force these dastardly evils back into Pandora’s Box using Playfire Rewards!

Putting the Box to one side, we'd like to invite you on a trip to Pandora in 2K's awesome Borderlands 2. Whether you're well travelled here or are putting on your vault hunting gear for the first time, there's GMG Credit awaiting you deep in the depths of those bountiful holes! There will be plenty of opportunity to play Borderlands 2 this weekend and you could say it would be a rewarding experience! With Borderlands the pre-sequel coming later on this year there's never been a better time to rake in some Playfire Rewards!

Feature: Hard West

Hey folks,

It seems the good, the bad and the ugly hang around the Kickstarter saloon. In Hard West we have the good, the badass and a game to eagerly await. It's being developed by an experienced team consisting of developers from the Call of Juarez and Dead Island series, and the ideas are original and distinct enough to grab our attention.

In essence, it's an amalgamation of gritty western and the surreal nature of the supernatural - all the while seeking to create an atmosphere that evokes uncertainty and tension. It’s their way of applying an interesting twist to the standard Western formula. The notion conjures very fond memories of Red Dead Redemption's Zombie Nightmare DLC, which was a cracking romp. If Hard West is able to pull off its own brand of unnatural surrealism it would certainly be worth diving into.

Thursday's Rewards - 21/08/2014

Hey folks,

Hope y'all are having a good week! We have rewards for an exciting early access game, Invisible, Inc. which will be sending players to a grim future, where they shall battle evil corporations from the shadows!

The game casts the player as the shadowy Operator, who directs a team of highly trained sneaky spy types around procedurally generated missions as you attempt to make a tasty profit from undertaking corporate espionage of the highest order. The art style reverberates character and the RPG elements will keep players hooked in as they decipher the secrets of your mysterious employer. While hunting down these secrets, Playfire Rewards will be loitering in the shadows, quietly pulling strings of its own.

Chat: Horror Revival

Hey folks,

Having cleaned up after finishing the trouser-ruiningly scary P.T, the excitement for new horror games has set in. There's a storied history of interesting horror releases, with Indie devs leading the way when it comes to bladder loosening terror. The Amnesia titles, The Dark Descent and A Machine for Pigs, both immersive, dark and incredibly sinister.

Slender Man is another game that's incredibly simple in its execution, but truly shines as an exemplary horror experience that you want to share with friends and discuss online. It's the Twitch era of horror, where streaming live scares is the go-to activity for any jump-scare nuts.

Triple-A horror gaming appeared to have peaked with Silent Hill 2. Without having to pull out set pieces or general jump scare tactics, Silent Hill’s clinging atmosphere creates tension through it’s very existence, making the player feel truly alone all the while building the sense of impending doom. If you look at big budget horror from the last few years you will be saddened by the lack of scares on offer, but the P.T. is the herald of what is to come, with Silent Hills beckoning with the promise that gamers will ‘shit their pants’. The Evil Within, Alien Isolation and other gems are also being developed as we speak, and will hopefully create a renaissance in horror. For better or worse...

What's your favourite horror game? Being even more specific - what's your favourite scare in any game ever? What horror title are you most looking forward to, and how do you think the rise of indie horror games and Twitch has shaped the kind of horror experiences we get today? Answers on a bloodstained postcard!

50 Games You Must Play
Before You Die...

We're at the final stretch, counting down to number one. It's been an eventful couple of weeks, but we're finally revealing the toppest dogs at the top of our list of top dogs. These are the games you simply have to play, no matter who you are or what genres you prefer. These ten games won't disappoint...

Wednesday's Rewards - 20/08/2014

If Playfire HQ was taken over by the Knights Templar we wouldn’t look to Assassins sporting over-the-top cloaks with fancy hidden daggers to come save us - we’d turn to everyone’s favourite Patent Attorney, George Stobbart, the star of the epic Broken Sword series.

The series debuted in the mid 90s when adventure games were at the zenith of the industry with Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars is one of the shiniest jewels in the gem-encrusted crown of the genre. The series success continued into the new millennium, with its latest iteration, The Serpent’s Curse, being a Kickstarter success. This ensured that a new generation of gamer would have the opportunity to discover a great series, as well as great characters and some of the finest writing in games full-stop.

So when you go on your adventures with George Stobbart and Nico Collard you’ll have Playfire Rewards to be your ever loyal sidekick! Broken Sword will be coming to GMG later today, so look to the site later if you fancy undertaking a great adventure with GMG! We’ve also got rewards for the dark fantasy RTS, King’s Bounty: Dark Side, which is sure to be a delicious experience - just be wary of eating poisoned apples.

Evolve Community Event Round-up!

We've seen some things man, and some stuff...

Just over a week ago we took a handful of lucky Playfire community members down to the offices of 2K in Windsor, where they would get the exclusive chance to spend a day with us playing the latest build of Evolve - the same build that was shown at Gamescom 2014 just last week.

Needless to say, it was a fantastic day with fun had by all - us especially. We love seeing you guys, and getting to play games with you is the perfect environment! Here are some pictures, tweets and experiences on the day...

Hey folks,

Reward hunting can be an immensely stressful experience. Fortunately for those times where you find yourself stuck in the mud, there are games like Mountain to help you relax and get back on your feet.

Mountain is happy for you to not get involved - it will cooly do its thing in the background while you busy yourself getting stuck into something else, but it is always there to massage your senses and to ooze with the quite confidence of a mountain in its prime. In all seriousness it is a very odd thing to call a game, but there is a very mesmerising quality to it, which is quite the achievement for something so simple. Think of it as being the scented candle to Playfire Rewards' Barry White.

30 Indie Games You Must Play: 10 - 1

30 Indie Games You Must Play

The final list has arrived, but what games have made the top ten?!

Monday's Rewards - 18/08/2014

Hey gamers,

Hope y’all survived the weekend. We’ve got rewards coming out of the wazoo, including the idiosyncratic Clockwork Empires.

As an employee of the Clockwork Empire, a Junior Bureaucrat, you're given the license to take control of the infrastructure, creating your own warped history in this building sim. You're tasked with erecting and sustaining a colony that's fit to sustain the glory of the ever expanding empire, with free-form building and plenty of tasks to keep the player and the colonists busy!

The gameplay alone is worth your time despite being early on in the Early Access process. To add extra spice to the gameplay there is the essence of Lovecraftian themes adding depth - if you aren’t able to fully provide for your workers they will start to go mad, some will even resort to cannibalism to sate their hunger. Colonists are prone to create cults worshiping the fish monsters that plague your new world if you cross these vindictive aquatic terrors. Perhaps your colonists would be better off creating a cult to Playfire Rewards! We're not sure how well that'd go, though...

Hey folks,

Celebrating the games one year anniversary, Surgeon Simulator has had a cracking DLC release as homage to its awesomeness, setting the bar high for the never ending disappointment that is Joncol who has hit two years here at GMG and neglected to bring us obligatory treats.

Bossa Studios injected extra loveliness into the game, with a huge amount of new achievements, as well as a general graphical update, which dresses up Bob, the patient, and his innards up to the nines. Along with looking great, more eye and mouth operations have been made available for you to get your teeth into, as well as new settings - so you can malpractice surgery in corridors now! With there being more opportunities for you to play doctor it is only fitting that Playfire Rewards will be assisting in the operation!

Hey folks,

For the first time in yonks there are no new releases on Steam, which meant I put my investigative sniffer nose on to find some great title to add to the rewards lineup - I'm very open to quirky suggestions for similar days so feel free to put 'em in the comments below! It led me to Jazzpunk.

Jazzpunk is odd, and that's clearly a founding principle upon which the devs created this cracking comedy game. Players are plonked into an alternate reality, where the Cold War is at its coldest and the world is rife with corporate espionage and sentient martinis. The game promises to have some jokes and provide 5% of your daily vitamin C++ intake and we’ll add some Playfire Rewards to make it a sweeter treat!

Feature - Gryphon Knight Epic

Hey folks,

I’ve been knocking around on Kickstarter again to see what interesting projects are floating about and I happened across a rather snazzily moustachioed offering, in the form of Gryphon Knight Epic which has the potential to be really cool.

The game is being crafted in Brazil, by Indie Dev’s Cyber Rhino Studios, who look to channel artistic expertise and excellent story telling into a nostalgia inducing format with the aim to create something that is good old-fashioned fun!

The devs have looked to spin a tale founded in the classic medieval fairy tales of a gallant knight saving the princess and living happily ever after, with the added joy of a squad of magical beast flying heroes!

Tuesday's Rewards - 12/08/2014

Hey folks,

My senses have spent the morning being assaulted by the cacophonous building works that have surrounded Playfire HQ. Thankfully Playfire Rewards will help supply some necessary distraction to ease the pain.

Leading the relief effort is the uber funky Overruled, which has declared that variety and fast pace are the order of the day when it comes to multiplayer beat 'em ups. The core feature of the game is that you can change the rules during any given round through use of change ‘em up cards, which modifies the game to help you come out on top when beating the stuffing out of your opponents! Charming design, quirky characters and a lot of fun to be had!

Playfire Rewards - Shark Week Special

Hey folks,

If you find yourselves down at the beach this week, you best be careful. Not only is the Playfire Rewards BETA basking in the shallows waiting for unsuspecting victims, it's also Shark Week, the only week of the year where sharks are able to walk on land, or something. We’ve got some jaw-dropping rewards to honour our supreme oceanic overlords.

Originally I had planned to give everyone a free shark, but unfortunately the overheads and insurance costs just made it impossible. Instead, we’ve gone through thousands of titles and pulled out our favourite shark themed cheevos! If you think we’ve missed any, let us know in the comments and we might add it during the week!

Round 1, Fight!

With a hadoken and a face melting dragon punch, Playfire Rewards enters the arena with a slate of new releases.

Appearing today, newly balanced, and with extra content, one of the most storied fighting game franchises Street Fighter returns with an almighty Shoryuken. The dev’s pride themselves on the continued excellence of the series, firm in the belief that Street Fighter is a by-word for fighting excellence, with much of the balancing being aimed at its popular professional scene as well as us gamers! This release rocks out with some original game modes, a bandana full of new characters, and no doubt hours of fun (AND MOAR HADOKEN). Gamescom 2014: What We Want To See

We love Gamescom. We love it very much. So much that we've put together a list of games we probably won't get to see at Gamescom because they won't even be there. But that hasn't stopped us speculating the wonders of sequels and new games that we very much desire.

Take a look!

Wednesday's Rewards - 06/08/2014

G’day peeps,

Today we are going for a truly dynamic blog post. It's got thrills, spills, Playfire Rewards aplenty, and of course, me.

Headlining today's new releases is the instruction we all wanna hear from bosses and teachers; Back to Bed. It's an artistic 3D puzzle game - artistic is an apt descriptor as the levels are very reminiscent the work of MC Escher. The story features Bob, who's bored at work and regularly finds himself falling asleep. Every time he does fall into a slumber, he sleepwalks, but fortunately he has a dream guardian dog that looks after him during snoozes. The player controls the dog to solve each level, protecting Bob and guiding him safely to bed. How lovely.

Tuesday's Rewards - 05/08/2014

Hey all,

I hope that you are all enjoying chasing the current slate of Playfire Rewards; we've got a few more to whet your appetite.

Mind: Path to Thalamus is one of the week's more curious releases and is certainly guaranteed to tickle the brain. This is an indie puzzler where the player character is comatose, trapped in his own mind, while the environment is affected by his mood. Puzzles are solved by controlling the weather to manipulate your surroundings, which is an interesting twist. The real standout is the environment itself, beautifully rendered in the Unreal Engine, the game is absolutely stunning - with those addition of Playfire Rewards, there is no reason not to dive in and explore your way to cheaper games!

G’day gamers,

Hope that the weekend added the perfect amount of whizz to your bang, such that you have the required total to power through this weeks rickshaw of Playfire Rewards.

To start the week off with the intuitively entitled Guns and Robots, we’ll be challenging you to put on your ass-kicking trousers. Battle other players' constructed mechanical marvels to state your claim as a legendary robot builder. The game has a distinctively cartoony feel to it, which adds a really chaming comic element to the mecha killing machines. Show your creative and competitive side and earn yourself some Playfire Rewards!
